Windows 10 Support Ending Next Month! Here’s What It Means For You

September 01, 2025

Attention: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your PC will continue to function after this date, Microsoft will stop providing critical updates and technical assistance that keep your system secure and running smoothly.

Why Should Business Owners Care?

  • Increased Security Vulnerabilities: Without ongoing updates, your computer becomes a prime target for viruses, malware, and cyberattacks, putting your business's sensitive data at serious risk. Upgrading your operating system is essential to maintain robust protection.
  • Software Compatibility Concerns: Many applications are designed to work with the latest operating systems. Once Windows 10 support ends, some programs may malfunction or cease to operate, disrupting your workflow.
  • Regulatory Compliance Risks: For businesses handling confidential information or subject to strict regulations, running outdated software can lead to compliance violations, potentially resulting in fines or legal complications.

Your Available Choices

Microsoft strongly recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all current Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, leading to upgrade errors on incompatible PCs.

If your device isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:

  • Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
  • Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
  • Switch to a Linux operating system
  • Continue using Windows 10 beyond the deadline (not recommended due to security risks)

Before making any changes, always back up your important data to prevent loss during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers ESU as a temporary solution, providing security patches for up to one year after support ends in October 2025.

You can register for ESU by paying a $30 fee or redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, a free option requires enabling Windows Backup to sync your settings and files to OneDrive, which includes 5 GB of free storage (additional space may be needed for large data).

Don't delay! You must register for ESU before the October 14 deadline to qualify.
